Leighton Holdings Limited (LEI) subsidiary Thiess has been awarded a three-year $229 million contract extension by South Walker Creek Mine owner BHP Mitsui Coal Pty Ltd. The mine produces both PCI and thermal product coal for export. Leighton said the new contract focuses on overburden and coal mining. Thiess constructed and began operating the mine in 1996 before the contract for the removal of overburden, coal processing, and train loading was extended in 2000 with subsequent extensions in June 2003 and in July 2007.
